It's tough being the new kid. Just ask Nick, the titular New Kid in Dennis Foon's play about an immigrant family adjusting to life in the United States. On his first day at school, Nick's hopes of making friends are ruined when his fellow students make fun of his clothes and tease him about his accent. His mother encourages him to stick with it, but she's also having a hard time getting used to life in a new place so far from home. To drive home his themes of acceptance and goodwill, Foon created a unique twist for his script: Nick and his family speak English, while the American kids speak an invented language. The lessons imparted in this latest production from Adventure Stage Chicago are perfect for kids age 8 or older, as well as parents hoping to teach their children about cultural differences and what it's like to be bullied.
This show is recommended for ages 8 and older.
