In October 2012, the Canter's Deli menu was updated to make way for lots of new options. It now features panini-style melts that offer a lighter taste of East Coast deli trademarks. For example, the little dip (brisket, onion gravy, and muenster cheese, pressed and grilled) rings up at $9.95. The burgers have been updated, too. Thick-cut bacon, avocado, tomato, purple onion, and blue cheese make up the Black and Blue burger ($12.95). The bun is challah bread baked right on the premises.

But the trademarks aren't going anywhere soon. You can get a corned-beef Reuben for $14.50 and a hot pastrami for $12.50. Another signature sandwich is Matt's Special—turkey, coleslaw, and russian dressing on challah bread—for $13.75. You can also try the matzo ball soup ($6.75), another very popular menu item. Breakfast favorites, such as buttermilk pancakes ($6.50), chocolate chip banana pancakes ($8.50), and corned beef hash and eggs ($8.95), are served all day, and dinner entrees, including stuffed cabbage ($13.75) and a selection of salads, round out the menu.

Domestic and premium beers ($3.50–$4.95) and red and white wines ($4.75–$5.95) complement a list of specialty cocktails and classics, such as the bloody mary ($6.25), mimosa ($7.25), and strawberry margarita ($6.75).

In a melodious turn of events, Canter's also caters. Choose from options such as sandwich platters ($12.75/person), fish platters ($17.50/person), dessert trays ($48), and more.

Canter's Deli

Ben Canter and his brothers had been manning the counter of their deli in Jersey City, New Jersey, for five years—familiarizing faces of regulars and catching their culinary stride—when the stock market plummeted in 1929. Like many, they were forced to scrape together the little they had retained, a mere $500, and head west. Los Angeles in 1931 wasn't a delicatessen owner's dream location, but they opened Canter's Deli nonetheless.

Throughout the next 84 years, four generations of Canters would do their parts to help the displaced deli fit into its Hollywood setting. They moved to their current location at the old Esquire Theatre, added a cocktail lounge named the Kibitz Room, opened a new store in the "O" of the Hollywood sign, and watched their doors open to a who's who of celebrities, including Marilyn Monroe, Jack Benny, Elizabeth Taylor, Wilt Chamberlain, Prince, and the band members from Guns N' Roses. The deli has been utilized over the years as a filming location for many movies and television shows.

The Canters overhauled their menu in 2012 to reflect the changing times and West Coast tastes. Among the newcomers are panini-style deli melts and updated burgers such as the Black and Blue, which comes loaded with thick-cut bacon. The best East Coast staples remain, of course. A good example is the hot corned-beef Reuben served on rye bread that's double-baked in-house and grilled to perfection. Available 24 hours a day, the expansive selection of deli fare and baked goods has garnered an equally expansive amount of press, including the monte cristo’s designation as one of Esquire's Best Sandwiches in America.

As a microcosm of the deli's convenience and culture, the staff validates parking for up to 90 minutes in its parking lot, where muralist Art Mortimer's seven-panel collage-style mural depicts Jewish history in Los Angeles.
