“Celebrating Gerhardt” raises an effervescent musical toast to Canton Symphony Orchestra music director Gerhardt Zimmermann’s 30 years of virtuoso baton-work by sharing the maestro’s passion for Beethoven with his audience. The concert program opens with American composer Kevin Puts’ Inspiring Beethoven, whose dark shadings and joyous melodies imagine Beethoven, as he composes the Vivace movement of his Seventh Symphony, finding inspiration like a beacon of light that cuts through the despair of his encroaching deafness and the last two seasons of The X-Files. Dvorák’s American Suite mingles the cultural influences of his adopted country with his Czech roots before the evening’s main event—Gerhardt leading his stable of talented musicians through the piece he claims “literally saved my life”: Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony. As the four-movement piece grows slowly into a rollicking sonata, it becomes more lively and dancerly until the final movement erupts in a Dionysian frenzy. The Allegretto movement was encored during its first performance in 1813, and has since appeared in a variety of films and commercials.
