Cara Dee started taking family portraits in high school and shot her first wedding in college. Despite this early success, she only considered photography a hobby at first because she was busy pursuing a career in social work. Then, she met an old woman who suffered from dementia. This woman couldn't even remember her own daughter—even though she visited her mother daily. Cara asked the daughter for a photograph of her with her mother; the picture the daughter chose shook loose memories for both of them. The mother held her daughter's hand, called her by name, and told the story of when the picture was taken. Cara Dee was so moved that she changed careers, taking up photography full time to help preserve memories for others.
She opened CaraDee Photography in 2005, and she has been snapping shots ever since. Her expert social skills still come in handy, as she meets and works with hundreds of different people over the course of a year. She says that's actually her favorite part of her job: encountering new people and hitting pause on a few moments in their lives.
