It was a great experience. John (my instructor) was a good teacher, very patient and certainly very informative and professional. The class experience was all that I was looking for and more.

Just excellent!

Fantastic, professional, and money well spent. The safety class alone was worth the price paid!

What You'll Get

Boat captains must master nautical lexicon before sailing the seas to ensure that they can distinguish port, which means left, from starboard, which means launch the vessel into deep space. Count down to a sea launch with this Groupon.

Choose Between Two Options

  • $89 for a two-hour on-the-water boating course (a $199 value)

Participants meet at the dock, where captains teach them nautical terminology such as the parts of the boat, how dock lines are used to secure it, and how to read and operate helm controls. They then board one of the club's six bow riders, deck boats, or two pontoon boats, where they'll learn to steer from the stern, how to cast off at the appropriate speed and angle, maneuver at low speeds, judge visibility, and navigate on the water.

  • $239 for a one-day boat rental with one-day membership and safety course (a $525 value)

One-day members undergo a brief course on nautical safety, covering how to avoid other boats, how to be mindful of people in the water, and why one should never use a propeller to chop pineapples. Members and their passengers then board a 15-passenger Harris FloteBote 220 Sunliner pontoon boat to spend up to a full day cruising Lake Norman's cerulean waters.

Both options also entitle Groupon customers to 25% off annual membership, normally $4,000.

Carefree Boat Club Lake Norman

Marc and Oana Graveline grew up on the water—he along the coast of Virginia, and she in Romania, near the Black Sea. When they moved to North Carolina, their mutual love for the water drew them to Lake Norman's calm waters, tree-lined shores, and wildlife. They envisioned themselves teaching their two children how to drive a boat, and they bought one—a 21-foot Sea Ray. As the cost of their boat's upkeep began to mount, they searched for alternatives to ownership and started their own chapter of the Carefree Boat Club. Today, their children can regularly be seen cleaning their fleet of eight bow riders, sun-deck boats, and pontoon boats or organizing for member socials.

The independent owners and their team of captains and instructors join those of 24 other locations throughout the East Coast and the South in helping members share vessels and learn that it takes a village to wax a hull in less than 10 seconds. Instructors train new members in an extensive boating course, during which they learn water safety, steering procedures, nautical terminology, and navigation. Once each member is deemed seaworthy, they let him or her reserve boats up to six months in advance.
