Carolina Coffee Shop
How long does it take for something to become a tradition? 10 years? 90 years? UNC students and the locals have been going to Carolina Coffee Shop for even longer than that. The restaurant moved into the former student post office in 1922, which makes it the oldest original restaurant in Chapel and the state of North Carolina. Its brick walls, wooden booths, bar, and counter have been constants since its early days as a soda shop, and today Carolina Coffee Shop continues to serve up an expansive menu of diner favorites, despite it's "coffee shop" name.
Of course, the baristas are masters at pulling espresso and brewing tea, but the staff also mixes up bloody marys and mimosas, both of which pair with signature brunch dishes like french toast coated in corn flakes. Later in the day, they shift their focus to sandwiches and burgers, pulled-pork barbecue plates, Angus beef chili, and fried flounder platters. They source local ingredients whenever possible, from the meat in dinner entrees to the Carrboro Coffee Roasters beans in their coffee grinders.
