When humans developed upright posture and huge brains, they left the care of the tree canopies in the hands and foot-hands of irresponsible monkeys that still haven't paid the first month's rent. Take back the treetops with today's Groupon: for $40, you get a two-hour, adult high-course zip-line tour of Carolina's canopyscape from Carolina Ziplines Canopy Tour in Westfield, a tree-centered thrill ride that rockets eco-friendly tree tourists through the air in speedy style under the watchful shadow of Pilot Mountain (an $80 value). All equipment is included. Although this Groupon is only valid for those over 13 years old, children ages 3 through 12 can also enjoy the tour for the standard $40 price.

This excursion, which gives Tarzans and Janes the opportunity to enjoy the familiar feeling of tree trunks rushing past on either side, starts with some basic paperwork, a brief safety orientation, and some time on a practice cable to get a feel for things. After a short orientation, daredevils climb onto the 12 wooden platforms and 11 steel cables of the high course. Voyagers start with shorter hops from platform to platform before shooting across the 1,400-foot final stretch and sailing majestically through the canopic zone at vertiginous speeds of up to 50 miles per hour. During this platform-jumping megazip, enjoy excellent bird's-eye views of the Carolina treetop ecosystem, the distant, majestic forest floor, and possibly ancient forest deities still imprisoned in tree trunks by magic runes.

The Pilot Mountain property of Carolina Ziplines Canopy Tour founder Robert Nickell combines speed-fueled thrills, tree-swinging tree swinging, and a high-flying opportunity to express humanity's unifying hatred of gravity.

Carolina Ziplines Canopy Tour

Standing on a platform, eco-tourists pause to admire the view before stepping from their perch to soar across a high wire and admire the complex ecosystem of animals, plants, and Swiss Family Robinsons that lives in the scenic canopy. This moment—both tranquil and adrenaline-filled—occurs every day at Carolina Ziplines Canopy Tours, where experienced guides lead safely harnessed visitors on excursions through the verdant treetops of the Carolina forests nestled in the shadow of Pilot Mountain, near Hanging Rock State Park. The zipline course weaves from platform to platform, culminating in a 1,000-foot-long uninterrupted soar. After tours, guests can linger to have a picnic on the historic grounds, enjoy a bonfire when the weather’s cool, or even stay overnight in a cozy inn.
