Pirate the beauty secret of Cleopatra, Glastonbury Music Festival attendees, and worms with today’s Groupon. For $35, you get one 60-minute mud-enhanced steam tent body treatment at Carrollton Square Spa, a $70 value.
Self-coating your entire backside in body-beautifying muck is likely to mess up your pants. At Carrollton, you’ll strip down and sprawl out on a cushy bed, letting a mud master (aesthetician) paint you with one of three masks:
- Purge toxins with the Sedona & French Red Clay Mud Masque, an anti-aging, vitamin-packed (E, A, B, B12) potion guaranteed to get you glowing.
- Envy the crab in your California roll? The Seaweed French Green Clay Masque treatment turns you into human sushi with stimulating, detoxifying results.
- If you’re looking for a natural way to soothe tired, aching skin, the Dead Sea & Chamomile masque (a blend of lavender, damania, marigold, lime, cornflower, and St. John’s Wort) should do the trick.
Exposed brick, thoughtful bunches of fresh flowers, and understated tones make the downtown spa a quiet escape from the busy hustle and bustle of city life, which is often disappointingly devoid of mud.

Mud’s Most Magnificent Moment
Mud is a many-splendored thing. In many ways, it is the very definition of dirty, but it can also help your skin get clean. Here’s a timeline of mud’s greatest accomplishments:
197 BC: Egyptian scientists are the first to recreate mud in a laboratory. During the resulting celebration, they also discover its beauty applications.
400–1500: Mud reaches the height of its popularity during the Middle Ages, when it is widely used as a bandage substitute.
1738: A deadly mudslide is averted in Cleveland by a friendly hurricane.
2080: Mud discovered on the moon. Too bad the only remaining human in the universe has no one with whom to share this discovery.

About Carrollton Square Spa
To get an idea of the kinds of services offered at Carrollton Square Salon & Spa, you need only look up. In one of the treatment rooms, a tent hovers over the massage bed, ready to catch clouds of toxin-dispersing steam. In another room, the ceiling’s wooden bars allow trained ashiatsu practitioners to buoy and balance themselves while massaging clients' backs with their feet. The only thing you'll find on the ceiling of the relaxation room is soft, recessed lighting and the trapped cartoon-bubble sighs of stress relief left behind by previous guests.
The salon and spa harnesses the historic charm of downtown Carrollton and is filled with friendly, down-to-earth staffers. This combination won over readers of the Carrollton Leader, who voted it the Best Spa and Best Massage in 2012.
