Creating a masterwork of art can be like wandering through a maze: after a lengthy period of reflection and contemplation, you’ll still probably starve. Appreciate the figurative risks and transcendent joys of artistic creativity with today’s Groupon: for $19, you get $39 toward any class or camp or one entry into an Art-2-Gogh painting party at Casa de Linda in New Braunfels (a $39 value).
Created by 30-year art-teaching veteran Linda Calvert Jacobson, Casa de Linda houses creative classes, camps, and parties, all taught by experienced artists. Feed inner starving artists with an adult art class ($95–$295) such as Basic Acrylic Painting ($125/6 classes), where students learn to use various tools to properly mix colors and paint special effects. Or create window-worthy sun catchers and add pizzazz to plain glass monocles with the Stained Glass for Adults: Beginning Lead class ($225/6-week course). Casa de Linda also hosts children’s art camps for ages 5–16, with topics ranging from creating papier-mâché fish to sculpting and painting dinosaurs. All classes and camps are kept small and include all required supplies.
For a more social paint scene, the Art-2-Gogh painting parties combine experienced instruction, painting subjects, and friendly attendants into a three-hour shindig of color, conversation, and paintbrush fencing. Painters, equipped with all necessary supplies as well as a disposable wine glass, may sip on complimentary coffee and tea before embarking on their canvas adventures. Each class highlights a different Texas-themed subject to portray with liquid hues, such as Gruene Hall, which bills itself as Texas’s oldest dance hall, the Guadalupe River, and a 10-gallon hat. Though other refreshments are provided, clients must bring their own wine if they so choose.
