The Issue: Lack of Court Advocates for Children

Currently, 350 children in Tarrant County who have been abused or neglected are on the waiting list for a court advocate to serve as their voice throughout legal proceedings. These court advocates often become the most consistent person in their charges' lives since they get to know children personally, visiting them at their foster homes, daycares, and schools. They also review medical information and check in with the children's teachers to follow their progress at school after a family trauma.

The Campaign: Providing Advocacy Services for Children

If 50 people donate $10 to this Grassroots campaign, then CASA of Tarrant County can provide four months of court-advocacy services for a child who has been abused or neglected. This covers the cost of recruitment and 30 hours of training for one volunteer court advocate. Each additional $500 raised will be used to provide four months of advocacy services for another child.

CASA of Tarrant County

CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) of Tarrant County helps protect and advocate for the best interests of neglected and abused children involved in court proceedings. After 30 hours of intensive training on the legal process, foster care, courtroom procedures, and child abuse, volunteer advocates receive their first case and then speak up for the children through every step of the court process. Advocates visit with the children and get to know their teachers, family members, and school counselors to help determine where the child will be happiest and safest, with the goal of placing each child in the best possible permanent home. Last year, CASA of Tarrant County advocates served 750 children.

Customer Reviews

They serve a great need in assisting families to turn their futures in a positive direction. As the "voice of a child" often the most work they do is to support the parents in getting their ducks in a row.
