Though coveting thy neighbor's wife or underground sprinkler system is beyond the pale, longing for a mouthful of his cuisine is an understandable desire. Today's Groupon satisfies desires to eat from the table of our nation's neighbor: for $15, you get $30 worth of Mexican fare at Casa Ramos II in Mesa.
The menu at Casa Ramos II ventures beyond familiar Mexican dishes with a wide selection of seafood and dinner plates garnished with fresh guacamole. Chefs cast a wide net at dinner, reeling in prawns to wrap in bacon for apretalados ($12.95) and hooking baby shrimp to join cheese and mushrooms atop the talpiquena's ($15.25) carne asada steak. Thirteen twin enchiladas ($8.25–$12.75) hide fillings such as crab and shredded beef after hanging stockings under blankets of homemade, Christmas-colored salsa. Lunch is served until 3 p.m., during which time 15 specials ($7.95) highlight house signatures such as tangy pork chile verde alongside steaks smothered in chipotle gravy.
The cantina's décor reveals a sense of whimsy, with a waterfall flowing between walls painted to resemble a weathered adobe mission, and toy horses posed on shelves as if they were parading for the town comptroller. Much of the furniture was deftly crafted by a member of the Ramos clan, who carved lucky horseshoes in the handsome, high-backed wooden booths and etched sunflowers against a mural of a tranquil harbor in dining sets.
