Of all the lies you've told, "I own my own winery" ranks up there with "My girlfriend in Canada invented the idea of emoticons." Today’s grapey Groupon preserves the lie with a personalized pour. For $115, you’ll get a wine bottling experience for up to four people (a $225 value) at Casavino Custom Winery, a father-and-son-owned winery that specializes in custom bottles and high-quality varietals. This Groupon gets up to four wine enthusiasts a wine tasting (including a cheese board for four), a bottling experience, and one bottle of wine to take home per person. This experience is available only to Groupon buyers.
During the DIYine, you'll start by tasting wine samples from different regions around the world. Pair the globe-trotting grape blood with a variety of hard and soft cheeses, gourmet crackers, and fresh fruit. Following the tasting, Casavino's expert wine-makers will lead your Grou-group in bottling a batch. You'll fill, cork, and label roughly 30 bottles, and each person will leave with one bottle of his or her own purple handiwork.
Aside from being a thoughtful gift for special occasions, birthdays, or weddings, a wine-bottling experience is also a perfect outlet for people who like to play with corks. If you have more than four people in your group, feel free to purchase another Groupon and use them together.
- I highly recommend this unique experience for yourselves, or as a gift to a wine lover in your life. The wines are very drinkable, and are similar to comparably priced wines available from local retailers. – Judy Hedding, About.com
- Making your own wine is a lot of fun and a very sociable way to spend an hour to two. – Jill Segrove, 365 Things to do in Phoenix
Casavino Custom Winery
Though Casavino Custom Winery carries up to 40 of its own wines at any given time—including blackberry, shiraz, and white-chocolate port—its main attraction is giving patrons the ability to make their own. During the winemaking experience, visitors sample the winery's many vintages, then decide which variety they'd like to ferment under the guidance of an expert winemaker. Budding sommeliers even create their own label design with help from an in-house graphic artist. The experience culminates in a group tasting for family, friends, and wine glasses over the age of 21, an event which occurs in a tasting room lined with barrels and jugs of busily fermenting wine.
