Like an Israeli Chris Thile, Avi Avital is using the mandolin to break down the borders between folk and classical music while bringing the instrument new respect in the world of classical music with his mastery. His mission: to revitalize the mandolin in both solo and chamber repertoire and inspire the creation of new music for the instrument. Praised for his "exquisitely sensitive playing" (The New York Times), the Grammy-nominated Avital will perform a program of pieces by Kreisler, J.S. Bach, Villa-Lobos, Bartók and traditional Turkish and Israeli music. Helping Avital create his unique sound on his Between Worlds Tour is accordionist Ksenija Sidorova and percussionist Itamar Doari. Now they come to the New England Conversatory as part of the Celebrity Series of Boston.
