  • For $15, you get a one-hour children’s clay-making class (a $35 value). The class is for children ages 3 and older, and is held on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. While a reservation is required, no deposit is needed for Groupon customers.
  • For $10, you get $20 worth of paint-your-own pottery.

Ceramics by Tess bears before artists a crafty itinerary of ceramically inclined enterprises, with classes, parties, and more than 6,000 pottery pieces upon which painters of all ages may daub and speckle acrylic or glaze paints. With paint-your-own pottery, there are no studio or materials fees; artists need only select their canvas, deciding whether to enliven a holiday ornament with a splash of color ($5–$12), add a dash of personality to a ceramic dog ($15), or script the phrase “World’s Greatest Air Guitarist” onto a coffee mug ($10–$17). Creations coated in acrylic follow artists home the same day, while those blotted with glaze can be picked up in one week.

During the one-hour children’s clay-making class, an instructor leads students in a hands-on, step-by-step workshop on the fundamentals of clay making. From a choice of five to six different objects, shape-forming students mold their chosen item out of clay, paint it, and ready it to take it home to its rightful spot on the mantel next to the autographed yeti portrait. Ceramics by Tess posts an online gallery where paint-freckled mini artisans proudly pose before their work.

About Ceramics by Tess

Ceramics by Tess's sunny studio welcomes adults and children to craft one-of-a-kind creations in a fun, supportive environment. Against a lilac wall in the warmly lit entryway, more than 6,000 ceramics await creative types to emblazon their utilitarian canvases in paint-your-own pottery sessions. A rainbow of acrylic paints and shiny glazes transforms the blank objects into original works of art, from a coffee mug emblazoned with World's Best Third Cousin Twice Removed to a piggybank filled with glazed dollar bills.

The studio also proffers hands-on, all-inclusive classes, which guide groups through the shaping of a single item, such as a bird molded from a lump of clay. Children as young as 3 may participate in some classes, and adults take over the shop Thursday evenings from 7 p.m. onward, sipping BYOB drinks and crafting more complex structures, such as life-size replicas of the Great Wall of China.
