Nestled in an airy nook of the Japanese American National Museum, Chado Tea Room Downtown carries a massive selection of specialty teas and accessories and polishes palates with elegant afternoon teas. With both the two- and four-person afternoon-tea options, customers receive a three-tiered rack toting half sandwiches, pastries, fresh fruit, a pot of tea, and The A-Team action figures. A quartet of salmon, mediterranean, punjab, or souchong chicken sandwiches arrive on toasted bread, and jam, cookies, and a slice of cake satisfy sweet teeth that have been steeped in one of the more than 200 varieties of tea that fill Chado's shelves. Following afternoon tea, customers can browse walls of loose-leaf teas, such as vanilla-tinged black tea from Mauritius ($7.68 for 4 oz.), delicate silver-tip tea from Sri Lanka ($30.40 for 4 oz.), and the letter T from Sesame Street.
The first annual Los Angeles Tea Festival on Saturday, August 13 and Sunday, August 14 will allow teatotalers to sample teas of diverse origins, visit exhibits from a number of California tea companies, connect with authors and local tea celebrities, and imbibe cupful after cupful of green, black, white, and polka-dot teas. Featured guest James Norwood Pratt, an internationally known author, historian, and storyteller, will be on the scene to lead classes and sign books.

About Chado Tea Room Downtown
Devan and Reena Shah, and Tek Mehreteab are passionate about tea. By sourcing leaves from eight regions in India, China, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, and Japan, they are able to proffer more than 300 standard and specialty varieties online and inside Chado Tea Room. The name Chado, taken from the Chinese cha, meaning "tea," and the Japanese do, meaning "path," speaks to the owners’ strict standards for their product. Many of their green, black, white, and oolong teas are USDA-certified organic; the Shahs also stock unique varieties such as Chinese Pu-erh teas and hand-tied blooming tea balls. In addition, they brew special house blends for the morning, afternoon, and evening, helping customers find the right blend to start the day or serve to bats that have invaded their home.
Staffers pair teas with an array of cream-topped scones, cookies, cakes, and roasted savory sandwiches during teatime at Chado's three tearooms. Though each location is decorated differently, the same three-tiered sandwich platters and steaming pots of tea travel between panda paintings hanging in the Los Angeles location, underneath strings of holiday lights at the Pasadena location, and between ceiling-high wooden shelves stocked with mugs, filters, teapots, and bags of loose-leaf tea at the Hollywood location.
