Nestled inside Hangar 1 at Springfield-Beckley Municipal Airport, Champion City Aviation lofts amateur aviators into the troposphere under the practiced guidance of certified pilots. Lessons commence with 45 minutes of ground instruction that incorporate essential preflight checks, such as instrument orientation and renaming the plane in honor of a favorite uncle. Propellers sputter to a start on a single-prop Cessna N65673 as fledgling pilots practice takeoff and landing procedures, bookending 30 minutes of instructor-assisted cloud hopping wherein students do the flying themselves. After exiting the cockpit, pupils receive endorsed logbooks with entries containing key flight data, which marks the first step in attaining a pilot’s license or astronaut learner’s permit.
