The Issue: Benefits of Youth Camps
Summer camp, day camp, overnight camp—on the surface these seem to be places where children go just to have fun and get exercise. But although fun and exercise are important aspects of these environments, campers also experience more lasting benefits. According to a report from the American Camp Association, camp fosters significant growth in self-esteem, peer relationships, leadership, and social comfort. Camp participants spend a significant time out of their comfort zone and away from families, helping to forge a sense of independence and community. Yet not every child comes from a family with the resources to send them to camp.
The Campaign: Sponsoring Camp for Underserved Youth
All donations to this Grassroots campaign will be used by the Channel Islands YMCA and five other of its branches to sponsor underserved youth from Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties in a camp. For every $600 raised, the organization can send one youth to either Camp Fox or Camp Sequoia Lake for one week. Those in Camp Fox will spend time on Catalina Island, in cabins near the Pacific, snorkeling, diving, fishing, and playing games, whereas those in the Sequoias participate in ropes courses, rock climbing, and mountain biking. At each camp, participants have the opportunity to make new friends and explore nature while counselors oversee all activities to ensure each camper has a positive experience.
Channel Islands YMCA
The Channel Islands YMCA has been around for 125 of the greater YMCA’s 170-year existence. In that time, the volunteer-run, volunteer-led outpost—a branch of the six-location Channel Islands YMCA network—has been a stalwart steward of the nationwide organization, striving toward the overarching mission of fostering well-rounded individuals through increased self-esteem, healthy lifestyles, and an appreciation for the outdoors.
Three core tenets guide the organization's list of programs and events: youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Whether visitors take part in a pickup game inside the basketball gym, take swimming lessons in the lap pool, or attend an overnight camp, they’re contributing to the sustainment of a strong community and celebrating a decades-old tradition.
