The universal desire to cover things in a thin sheath of gold has led to revolutions in architecture, dentistry, and the stagnant discus-shaped chocolate industry. Revel in the gilded age with today's Groupon: for $30, you get an Introduction to the Art of Gold Leaf Gilding class at the Charles Douglas Gilding Studio in Green Lake (a $62 value).
Charles Douglas, a 25-year veteran of professional gilding for frames, furniture, and fixtures, initiates students into the craft through gold-leaf workshops. A two-hour Introduction to the Art of Gold Leaf Gilding covers the basics of gilding wood, metal, glass, stone, and tax returns. Each student works with bona fide 22-karat gold leaf while learning about oil gilding, traditional water gilding, and the demanding art of glass gilding. Class members can also try their hand at burnishing water-gilded gold, taking home the skills needed to put the finishing touches on that summer palace. Workshops are held on Saturday from 10 a.m to 12:00 p.m. and 2 p.m.–4 p.m., each with an eight-person cap to ensure ample attention for amateur craftspeople.
