About Charles P. Stanley Cigar Company
In 1870, Charles P. Stanley, then a bright-eyed 16-year-old newly arrived from Ireland, began working at a cigar shop in a downtown St. Louis hotel. He quickly learned the ins and outs of the cigar trade, from different exotic blends to individual customers' preferences. Six years later, he was able to open up his own cigar shop and begin selling to ordinary Joes and celebrities alike. President Ulysses S. Grant and Sir Arthur Sullivan, of the Gilbert and Sullivan stage team, were among his big-name patrons.
The business remained thriving until the Great Depression, when it faltered under a decreased demand for such an indulgence. But the legacy was fresh in the minds of C. Patrick Stanley III and Kevin O'Reilly Stanley, the fourth generation of Stanleys, when they decided to get the business going again. Today, just around the corner from the original shop, they sell cigars from a well-appointed humidor and mix cocktails in a lounge outfitted with deep leather chairs and Charles P. Stanley's antique flat-screen TVs.
