For centuries, ancient civilizations traveled from village to village by canoe before discovering that walking across the land was far easier than paddling across it. Restore watercraft to its rightful roost with today's Groupon: for $99, you get a season pass for canoe or kayak and stand-up paddleboard rental at Charles River Canoe & Kayak. This Groupon can be redeemed at Charles River Canoe & Kayak's locations in Boston, Cambridge, Natick, Auburndale, and Newton. Boat availability may vary by location.

As paddling season returns to Boston's roaring rapids, Charles River Canoe & Kayak's numerous waterborne rental options will bait floaters biting at the bit to boat. Individual season pass holders are privy to unlimited canoe rentals ($139 value) or unlimited kayak and stand-up paddleboard rentals ($275 value). Passes also allow for half-price rentals of more voluminous vessels, giving families or Village People tribute bands ample rowing room in five-person canoes ($28/hour at full price), quad kayaks ($28/hour at full price), and more. All rates include paddles and life jackets; guests are responsible for bringing their own drum-beating Viking timekeeper.

With vessel selected, paddlers are free to take to the water and experience the beautiful sights and sounds of the boating area afforded by their respective rental location. Guests at the Boston location are in for a current-free 9-mile stretch of the Charles River, rolling past Harvard, MIT, the Esplanade, and the city's skyline, and Natick nautical navigators can soak up the beauty of Lake Cochituate State Park with their eye sponges. Newton/Auburndale above-water breathers will cover 6 miles of boating from Newton Lower Falls to the Moody Street Dam in Waltham, doffing straw boaters to parasol-twirling damsels enjoying picnic lunches on the verdant verandas of the riverfront, and urban adventurers can canoe from Boston to Cambridge or from Cambridge to Boston, then take the T to shuttle back.

Charles River Canoe And Kayak

Paddle-seekers can experience the Boston skyline and Cambridge from Charles River Canoe & Kayak's Kendall Square location or try visiting the Nahanton Park local which features over 50 acres or forests and gardens all along the Charles River. Kayakers and canoe-enthusiasts alike will bask in over 12 miles of flatwater throughout Upper Falls to Needham. The on-staff guides lead tours of the Charles River and Boston Harbor to educate participants in ecosystem conservation, view the skyline and sunset, or explore historic structures. To prepare customers entering the water for the first time, instructors coach riders of all levels in private or group lessons at the paddling school, which draws on more than 30 years of instructional tradition. Staffers can also equip boaters in the shop—where P&H kayaks hang alongside paddleboards and Wenonah canoes, dreaming of one day being the inspiration for a traditional sea chantey. Crew members help clients choose their ride and accessories from these selections and others through free daily demonstrations.
