Chateau Aeronautique Winery’s vintner Lorenzo combines his passions for winemaking and aeronautics on a lush Michigan vineyard that shares its space with an airplane hangar and grass runway. Tasters get a tour of the Bordeaux-modeled winery before retiring to a private tasting room replete with an ornate, wooden bar, providing the coziness of your Aunt Jolene’s wine cellar, only with more wine and fewer pun-spewing relatives. Knowledgeable sommeliers splash complimentary stemware with samples of the winery’s 11 wines, which span the grape gamut from dry to semi-sweet. Fermented from Michigan grapes, the wines waft diverse bouquets such as the 2010 chardonnay’s bright fruit and clover-honey finish or the 2009 Aviatrix blush, which tickles the nose with aromas of strawberry and crisp rose and a wispy feather. Each one-hour tasting includes a baguette and cheeses to pair with wines. Though not included in this Groupon, customers may take home bottles of their favorite wines ($14–$30/bottle). Chateau Aeronautique Winery is open for tastings Thursdays–Mondays from noon until 6 p.m.

Chateau Aeronautique Winery

Lorenzo Lizarralde's two passions—winemaking and aeronautics—may seem unrelated, but they coexist in harmony at Chateau Aeronautique Winery. There, the winery shares its space with an airplane hangar and grass runway on which the vintner frequently lands his 1956 Cessna 172. Fermented from Michigan grapes, the chateau's handcrafted wines span the gamut, from dry to semisweet, wafting strawberry bouquets, apricot aromas, and floral notes.

To spotlight his elixirs, Lorenzo regularly hosts events amid his idyllic environs, which take inspiration from the wineries in Bordeaux, France. Guests traipse across the grounds en route to a gazebo or the hangar, where they can revel with up to 80 fellow sippers. For more intimate flavor exploration, they flock to a private tasting room, replete with an ornate, wooden bar that provides the coziness of a grandparent's wine cellar, but with more wine and fewer Clark Gable posters.
