What You'll Get

Tours are an ideal way for anyone to learn more about a new city without resorting to drastic measures like running for mayor. Get acquainted with Chicago the easy way with today's Groupon: for $9, you get one ticket to Chicago Detours' newest walking tour, "The Loop: Explore Without Freezing" or "Good Times on the Mag," an upcoming tour (up to a $20 value).

Founded by Amanda Scotese, a former researcher and tour guide for PBS travel celebrity Rick Steves, Chicago Detours caters to curious visitors and locals alike, using curated, archival documents to inform and entertain Chicago's history-hungry. Tours consist of up to 24 people and three iPads, which display photographs, film footage, and Pac Man to provide tour-goers with media-rich, info-taining experiences. During "The Loop: Explore Without Freezing," which runs through March 31, guides will use secret shortcuts and underground passageways to avoid unsavory wintry elements and prevent their flock from being outdoors longer than five minutes at a time. The tour will include famous landmarks, such as Macy's, as well as "shh"-inspiring secrets, such as an unusual church hidden in a skyscraper and the pool of pickled relish lurking beneath Daley Plaza. Tour groups depart every Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 10:00 a.m. by the southeast entrance of Chase Tower, right near the Monroe Blue Line stop. Extra tour times will be added should those sell out. "Good Times on the Mag" begins in the spring and traces the history of the Magnificent Mile's nightlife, from the Jazz Age to today. Tour-goers visit sites of both elegant and debaucherous soirees, past and present.

About Chicago Detours

Founder Amanda Scotese, an avid traveler and freelance writer for Rick Steves's renowned travel guides, delegates sure-footed guides to lead sightseers to iconic landmarks and down the back alleys and lesser-known nooks of the Windy City. Tours probe the ins and outs of the Chicago's neighborhoods, such as the Loop, where they fill eyes with the sights of world-renowned architecture and minds with the secrets of the Pedway, an underground walkway that connects buildings throughout the business district with the Ninja Turtles' lair. The Historic Chicago Bar Tour, born of Chicago Detours' desire to spread knowledge of the city's entertainment history, takes tour-goers to three historic bars in an exploration of how the city had fun. Private group Jazz, Blues & Beyond tours explore historic neighborhoods on the North and South sides, and include diversions such as harmonica lessons from a bona fide blues blower. Chicago Detours also offers private-group tours for birthdays, family reunions, and corporate team-building exercises. Private group tour options also include Meat History of Fulton Market and Chicago Neighborhoods and Cultural Diversity.
