A philosopher once called theater “the mask of convention over the face of society in the mirror of the unknown reflecting the rear-view of the sports car of destiny.” Today’s side deal lets you in on the drama with two half-price tickets to one show during the Chicago Dramatists’ 2009–10 season. Known as a stepping-stone to stardom for new productions, the Dramatists most recently sent A Steady Rain, by resident playwright Keith Huff, to Broadway in a production starring Daniel Craig and Hugh Jackman. This Groupon lets you be the savvy drama insider, giving you and a companion access to your choice of dates for one of two world-premiere productions this season.
Lucinda’s Bed, running October 1 through November 8, is a new play by resident playwright Mia McCullough. Her recent success include Spare Change, which was selected to run the prestigious gamut at Steppenwolf’s First Look Repertory, and Taking Care, produced by Los Angeles’s Victory Theatre. In her newest play, the monster lurking under six-year-old Lucinda’s bed doesn’t disappear as she grows older, instead popping up in the most unexpected places as she struggles to lead a normal life. Depending on the night, the price of one ticket to Lucinda's Bed is either $25 or $30 (with the exception of preview nights), so you will save 40–50% on your pair.
The Chicago Dramatists' spring production, Jade Heart, is the latest work by Will Cooper, who was a finalist at the Ashland New Plays Festival in 2006. In Jade Heart, which runs from April 22 to May 30, a Chinese girl adopted by American parents seeks out clues to her identity, attempting to understand why she was abandoned and how she can fully become herself. See the production for even less than the $20 early-bird price.
Catch the next big thing to come out of the off-Loop theater known for attracting hot new productions and vetting them for their Broadway premiere. Avoid hasty last-minute deals with shady theater-ticket scalpers, and get this Groupon for your chance at dramaturgical delight.
Note: Not valid for preview shows or opening nights.
Lucinda’s Bed and Jade Heart are too new to have any reviews, but Yelpers give the Chicago Dramatists 4.5 stars. Critics are raving about A Steady Rain, which premiered in the Dramatists’ Theatre and opened September 29 on Broadway:
- It is hard to think of another show that has gone so rapidly from an off-Loop theater to Broadway, while catching a star cast along the way. Most certainly, this is the biggest success to emerge from Chicago Dramatists, a local theater company known as an incubator of new scripts. – Chris Jones, Chicago Tribune
- Unlike some of its sibling support organizations, such as New Dramatists in New York and Playwrights Center in Minneapolis, Chicago Dramatists is also a producing theater, staging three plays a year. And while a few shows have had strong word of mouth and sold out the 77-seat theater during short runs, "A Steady Rain" proved a different animal, drawing overwhelmingly positive reviews both for the script and production… – Steven Oxman, Variety
- Chicago Dramatists is having an extraordinary and memorable 2009. In addition to the success of A Steady Rain opening on Broadway this fall, starring Daniel Craig and Hugh Jackman, Chicago Dramatists enters its 31st season with the honor of the TCG New Generations/Future Leaders grant, the announcement of four new resident playwrights and a new associate artistic director, and its selection as only one of four theatres to be included as part of the inaugural Millennium Park "In The Works" Theatre Lab Project this spring. – BroadwayWorld.com
