It's not often that you get to experience heartbreaking drama and laugh-out-loud comedy in the same night, but that's exactly what you have with a double bill of La Voix Humaine & Gianni Schicchi. First, La Voix Humaine drops you in on a woman's late-night phone call with her lover, where secrets, lies and obsession are revealed. Soprano Patricia Racette, who has appeared on the Metropolitan Opera and Royal Opera House stages, plays the hopelessly in love Elle in this suspenseful drama. Then, it's on to lighter fare, Gianni Schicchi, largely considered one of Puccini's funniest operas. It tells the story of a wealthy man's scheming family and the peasant they enlist in an attempt to forge his will. Set in 14th century Florence, this ingenious one-act is the third and final part of the composer's Il Trittico and is best known for its popular aria, "O mio babbino caro." See both of these wonderful one-act operas at Harris Theater for Music and Dance in Millennium Park in Chicago.
