The Chicago Philharmonic Chamber Players trio of mezzo-soprano Susan Platts, horn player Neil Kimel and pianist Alan Darling take the stage at City Winery for an emotionally resonant afternoon of music, in The Transcendent Voice: Songs of Longing by Schubert, Mahler & Cooke. Platts, possessor of a “startlingly attractive” voice (The Washington Post), is set to sing Schubert’s “Auf dem Strom,” written in 1828, about a lover swept away on a river’s current. The trio then tackles a set of emotional nocturnes by British composer Arnold Cooke, and builds to a finale of Mahler’s mournful Kindertotenlieder, which ends on a triumphant note of hope. City Winery’s acclaimed brunch will be available for purchase before and during the performance as well.
