A nonprofit organization devoted to educating shutterbugs of all skill levels, Chicago Photography Center enlightens students on a variety of subjects during full-day boot-camp classes. Seasoned instructors draw on years of experience as professional photographers to lead each 6–7 hour session, covering topics such as proper equipment, composition, and software. Tabletop / Product Digital Photography instructs camera wielders in different lighting and composition techniques for capturing in-studio images appropriate for marketing materials, and Digital Photography and Film sessions lead students in snapping shots both indoors and out. The Photoshop and Beyond Basics Lightroom classes guide students through the eponymous software programs, leaving students with the ability to organize files, retouch blemishes and third eyes on subjects, and resize photographs for electronic mailings. The staff can provide cameras for certain classes, but students are encouraged to bring their own supplies. Click here for the current class schedule.
Membership grants patrons a year’s worth of benefits, including discounts on lectures, classes, and workspace rentals. Lectures run the gamut of photo-centric topics, including the fall 2011 series So You Want to be a Professional Photographer. For an hourly fee, members can head to the darkroom to develop prints, edit digital images in the computer lab, or chase away troublesome shadow puppets in the lighting studio. Additionally, customers will receive half off any seven-week class booked within three months of redeeming this Groupon.
