Today’s side deal to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra gets you a terrace-level seat to hear musicians giving a musical performance of Stravinsky’s legendary ballet score The Rite of Spring, conducted by David Robertson. The work, inspired by the image of a young girl dancing herself to death in a barbaric pagan ritual, requires a massive orchestra and 26 specially imported music stands. The ballet’s 1913 premiere in Paris incited one of the most famous riots in music history, a testament to Stravinsky’s mind-blowing orchestral vision. Prepare to get your music-riot on, and choose from center-terrace tickets ($25 each) or side-terrace tickets ($35) on Thursday, January 14, at 8 p.m. or Tuesday, January 19, at 7:30 p.m.

With intimate terrace seating, you can read the sheet music over the orchestra’s shoulder, study the slight yet beautiful movements of the musicians as they play, and sit facing the conductor. You’ll get to see the remarkable facial expressions the conductor uses to elicit the ebullient notes from the orchestra, including dramatic eyebrow raises, silent screams, and knowing winks. You’ll be close enough to see the French horns drain their spit valves and the trombones nearly collide with an errant, flying timpani mallet, an appropriate setting, and metaphor, for any date.

Reviews

Centerstage, Fodor’s, and Frommer’s recommend the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for locals and tourists alike: > * The Chicago Symphony Orchestra is considered among the best in the world…With the recent appointment of superstar conductor Riccardo Muti as musical director, the symphony will likely maintain – or even enhance – its international reputation. – Frommer’s

Yelpers and a lone Kudzu user give the CSO a perfect five-star rating, while Judy’s Book reviewers give it 4.8: > * Seeing and hearing the Chicago Symphony Orchestra is, in a word, amazing…Even non-musicians (such as yours truly) can appreciate and enjoy them. – Sunny X., Judy’s Book > * The acoustics in this place are unbelievable. It might just be that I don’t know any better, but listening to this orchestra was one of the best experiences I have had in a long time. – Douglas M., Judy’s Book

Chicago Symphony Orchestra

The Beatles have nothing on the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Over the course of its nearly 125-year history, the CSO has won 62 Grammy awards, performed the scores of award-winning films (such as Steven Spielberg's Lincoln), embarked on 39 overseas tours, and, just for good measure, added Yo-Yo Ma to its roster of performers. The renowned cellist was appointed the CSO's first Judson and Joyce Green Creative Consultant in 2010, helping to inspire the Chicago community through new initiatives and advocating for the power of music.

The themes of CSO's 100-some performances a year spring from absurdly creative conductors and virtuosic musicians. In addition to romps through the classical repertoire, audiences might find jazz tributes, films scored live, and the Beyond the Score series, which uses visual projections and even live actors to flesh out the stories behind the compositions on the program.
