$99 for a 2.5-Hour Basic Introduction to Sailing Course ($200 Value)

Students take hold of one wheel while an experienced U.S. Coast Guard captain commands the other, ensuring a safe journey during a hands-on lesson. Along the way, students learn about knots, nautical terminology, tacking, and right of way rules.

This course is designed for beginners who want to sail, those who wish to learn to sail without help, and experienced sailors interested in a refresher as well. Click here to see Chicago Yacht Share’s (CYS’s) frequently asked questions page.

Chicago Yacht Share

Students are in good hands with Chicago Yacht Share's Captain Norm Zable, who brings 45 years of sailing experience to his classes. Through CYS's progressive program, students can be out on the water this summer by earning their American Sailing Association credentials. They then move on to bareboat chartering opportunities aboard the performance cruiser named It's About Time. This vessel is a 2013 Jeanneau 379, which was named "Boat of the Year" by Cruising World in 2012 due to its combination of speed and luxury. Bareboat charters allow sailors to enjoy a multitude of perks, such as never having to worry about upkeep, storage, or inconvenient mutinies. If students aren't quite ready to skipper, captained charters are also available.

“Captain Norm was professional, knowledgable, and a great teacher. My wife and I had a wonderful time learning the various parts of the boat, tying sailor knots, and most of all, sailing. The session is very hands on, Captain Norm had us raising the main sail, casting off, and yelling "Ready!" - though definitely not in that order - as if it were our own boat. And I should note that while the weather failed to cooperate with us through multiple weekends, Captain Norm was very flexible, offering alternative sessions to attend. While I was out for a run the day of the session, Captain Norm called me to see if we could move the session up to midday, to avoid the evening storms. We took him up on the offer, and it worked out perfectly.”

  • “Such a fantastic experience! Would highly recommend to anyone wanting to know a bit about sailing and have a fabulous time!”
