Voted Best Children’s Theater in 2010 by the Phoenix New Times, the Childsplay professional theater company delights young audiences and families with awe-inspiring, imaginative productions. The 2011–12 season opens with an encore production of Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse, a spunky, young mouse's coming-of-age tale adapted from the book by author, illustrator, and rodent psychologist Kevin Henkes. Little ones aged 4 and older discover that the purse in question not only plays catchy melodies when it's opened, but carries a cool pair of movie-star sunglasses wherever our protagonist goes—including the classroom. Although she loves her new teacher, Lilly creates trouble at school with her new, big-girl accessory, whose purple, plastic parts stir up drama and the envy of plain-dressed field mice while revealing important life lessons.
This production finds its home at the Tempe Center for the Arts, which comes fully stocked with magnificent views of Tempe Town Lake and the Papago Mountains. In addition, visitors will find a multitude of restaurants and shopping close by in the Mill Avenue District, as well as a new candy store for rewarding well-behaved children and refueling sugar-powered SUVs.
