Pottery originated in the animal kingdom, with stags shaping extra sets of terra-cotta antlers to scare off enemies and bees making tougher and more aesthetically pleasing hives out of coil pots. Tap into pre-hominid traditions with today's Groupon: for $15, you get $45 worth of ceramics to paint at ChromaColour Creative Art Centre, located on 28 Street Northeast. This Groupon can be used to cover the cost of ceramic painting for up to two people.
With 60 feet of storefront windows, ChromaColour Creative Art Centre's sunlit studio swathes up to 50 pottery-painting Picassos in the relaxed atmosphere of a country kitchen. Ceramics slickers can pick from a variety of white or terra-cotta bisque pieces, including mugs and decorative items ($9–$20), Italian vases ($21–$30), functional pitchers ($31–$39), 12-inch vegetable or mineral trays ($50–$59), and more. Painters of all ages and brush-wielding abilities can transfer paper designs to the clay surface with tracing paper, stencils, and a specially designed lightbox before sitting down to brush on their choice of 90 eco-friendly pigments, brewed on-site by epicurean ChromaColour paint chefs. Throughout the process, staff members will be on hand to answer questions or help shape the squiggly 'stache on your Guy Fawkes portrait mug. Completed pieces will be dipped in a clear glaze and fired to make them food- and volleyball-safe.
While not included in today's deal, ChromaColour Creative Art Centre also hosts classes, camps, and workshops that tutor talented tykes in a wide variety of artistic skills, such as acrylic painting, digital animation, and ear removal. On drop-in days, pottery painters need no reservations, although it might be a good idea to call ahead if you're bringing a flock of penguins or other large group.
