What You'll Get
In America, tequila's popularity skyrocketed after the release of its theme song and moonrocketed following the song’s accompanying dance. Channel your inner Pee-wee with today's Groupon: for $12, you get a Passport to Tequila tasting (a $25 value) at Cien Agaves Tacos & Tequila, located in Old Town Scottsdale. Use your passport to collect 80-proof stampings during one of its four-hour tasting events, which are usually held on the last Thursday of each month from 6:30 p.m. until 10:30 p.m.
Cien Agaves offers the one-two punch of stiff but flavorful tequilas, followed by even more tequilas, during each four-hour tasting extravaganza. Take a liquid tour of Mexican agave lands with three different featured companies and a full spread of their succulently juiced succulent products—typically a reposado, anejo, and blanco from each. Representatives from each company will be available to answer questions, and chips and salsa will be floating around to cleanse palates and mystify participants with their gravity defiance. Tasters need not marathon their taste buds through the entire event; once you've got your passport you may come and go as you please. If you're coming straight from a hard day at the miniature-factory factory, you can also order appetizers, drinks, or food from the menu.
Email ahead to reserve your spot in a tasting—there are currently six months of tequila lined up for the reservation-taking, and more events may be scheduled as necessary to meet demand. Find Cien Agaves by searching out the wood-paneled, saloon-themed building that has appeared in eight of your last nine dreams.
This Groupon is not valid toward the purchase of menu items. You must be 21 or older to take a tasty tequila trip.
Although the tequila tastings are a new feature at Cien Agaves, it is well established as a house of agave liquor. The Phoenix New Times awarded Cien Agaves Best Margarita in 2008, and Examiner.com loves the drinks and atmosphere, giving it an A-. Yelpers give it an average of 3.5 stars:
- The house margarita...was so damn good that we pledged our eternal loyalty on the spot. The Jose Cuervo-based drink tastes just as good as the top-shelf margs we've had...Cien Agaves would never dream of using bottled sour mix instead of fresh squeezed lime. Perfecto. – Phoenix New Times
- If you visit Old Town Scottsdale (or live anywhere in the Phoenix area), put Cien Agaves toward the top of your “to visit/see/do” list; or as their T-shirts dictate: “Save Water, Drink Tequila.” – Ryan Kelley, Examiner.com

About Cien Agaves
Cien Agaves curates a cultured and diverse selection of authentic Mexican specialties including 13 taco varieties and 100 pure agave tequilas. The bar staff carefully selects the handcrafted reposado, añejo, and blanco varieties, which lend their spicy warmth to mixed drinks that have garnered the Phoenix New Times's 2011 award for Best Specialty Margaritas. Diehard tequila lovers can also make the restaurant's "Tequila Hall of Fame," reserved for those who taste each of the 100 tequilas. Citrus-marinated steak and beer-battered shrimp comprise a few of the tacos, available by the handful or platter.
The multileveled restaurant features catwalk seating in the upper level and an outdoor beer garden. During regularly scheduled tasting events, Cien Agaves features three specialty tequila artisans and welcomes guests to sample their craft. Representatives from each company are available at the events to answer questions and encourage responsible tasting.
