Wednesday Comedy Nights
Every Wednesday, the historic Cine El Rey Theatre fills with laughter. Performers seen on HBO, Comedy Central, BET, and Showtime take the stage to wax hilarious on life’s absurdities. Previous comics to grab the mic include Flo Hernandez, seen on Chris Spencer’s Minority Report and Def Comedy Jam, and Slade Ham, who has performed on Sirius XM Radio and on tour with the USO.
Cine El Rey Theatre
When Cine El Rey Theatre opened in 1947, locals hailed it as “el evento del año” (“the event of the year”). After World War II, the Bracero program brought a new generation of Mexican-born citizens to the United States—citizens who were often turned away at movie theaters, or at least ushered to segregated sections. The Cine El Rey Theatre, however, was built specifically for a Hispanic audience. Serendipitously, it’s early years also coincided with a period that many today consider Mexico’s Golden Age of Cinema. But films weren’t the only things to draw crowds in. Some of Mexico’s greatest performers made personal appearances on stage.
