The Circle City Socialites are an Indianapolis-based roller-derby league, operating independently of the seven other leagues in Indiana. The team consists of over 35 whippet-quick women on wheels, ready to shove and skate their way to derby victory under punny monikers such as "Maul of America," "Rumple SplitSkin," and "Splatty Hearst." The sport is competitive, entertaining, and family friendly with enough edge left over to raise the collective eyebrow of jaded adults. The sport showcases strong, empowered women doing what they love, inspiring countless girls to get sporty.
Roller derby is more than just speed skating in skirts or girl fights on wheels. It's a competition with strict rules. Two teams of five skaters go wheel to wheel on a flat track. One girl is appointed "jammer." Not a crafter of condiments but a point-scorer, she tries to get past the other team's "blockers" and score, while they try to block her and simultaneously shepherd their own jammer to the front of the pack. Hip and shoulder checks of the firmest sort are legal, though elbows, fists, and down-and-dirty trip 'n' grab tactics are forbidden.
