What You'll Get
The Big Apple's big attractions are best seen from the moon, but recent budget cuts in the space-tour industry have kept sightseeing within the stratosphere. See the city from the surface of the other final frontier with today's Groupon: for $15, you get one ticket to see New York by boat with your choice of one of three guided Hidden Harbor boat tours from Circle Line Downtown (up to a $29 value). Choose from the following options:
• The Newark Bay Tour on June 15, July 12, August 9, and September 13
• The Brooklyn Tour on July 26 and September 27
• The North River Tour on June 28 and August 23
All May–August tours depart from Pier 16 at the South Street Seaport, sail at 6:15 pm, and return at 8:15 pm; September tours sail at 5:30 pm.
The Newark Bay Tour cruises through the Erie Basin before entering the hustle and bustle of Kill Van Kull, one of the bay’s busiest waterways. From there, sightseers may gawk at a gaggle of landmarks, be it the captured chaos of the 9/11 teardrop memorial or the majesty of Newark Bay’s container ports, featuring some of the world’s largest container ships and the Tupperware they pack their lunches into. A stop by the Statue of Liberty leads the tour to its conclusion.
The Brooklyn Tour offers a smorgasbord of sights of the beloved borough—a tasty trip by the Navy Yard, home to three graving docks and an active shipyard; a gob-smacking gander at Gowanus Bay; and a visual sip of the Sunset Park waterfront—before pausing by the Statue of Liberty, where sailors may declare unrequited love for the lady by blasting slow jams from a vintage boombox. The North River Tour commences by passing around the southern tip of Manhattan, sweeping by Staten and Governors Islands. The excursion brings boating buffs exciting eyefuls of many Manhattan mainstays, including Pier 57 and the Chelsea Piers, before crossing the river to drink in the Hoboken waterfront, where On The Waterfront was filmed. Venture onto the full sun deck or the ship's other outdoor decks to wash down this sightseeing sojourn with a sun-poured glass of vitamin D.
Each heart-handshaking two-hour tour sails out of South Street Seaport's Pier 16 with the gusto of a championship crew team dieting on testosterone, zipping by landmarks on waves of wondrous wakes in the Zephyr. The sights seen on tour are cause for great merriment, making the tour a great trip for students and corporate groups.
Children's tickets are already offered for $15, but this Groupon still provides the best deal for adults and seniors.
