Though people are taught to reach for the sky, in time it becomes apparent that somersaulting through the sky is more practical. Attempt an achievable feat with today's Groupon: for $28, you get a two-hour weekend workshop at Cirque-ability on Sterling Road (a $56.50 value, including HST). Workshops run every Saturday and Sunday until the end of August; this Groupon expires August 28. Workshops are subject to cancellation.
The trained instructors at Cirque-ability endow pupils with aerial and acrobatic skills anchored in athletic, circus-inspired routines. During the Hammock, Silks and Acrobatics workshop, parties of all ages perform rhythmic poses and balletic spirals while suspended in the air by a special fabric hammock or a Herculean puppeteer. After attempting the professional body swing, students swaddle their limbs in the aerial silks, summoning flexibility and balance. Like a family-sized slingshot, Cirque-ability also launches groups on acrobatic adventures, enlisting cartwheels, handstands, and human pyramids to flourish a comprehensive fitness program. Children ages 8 and older are welcome in family workshops if accompanied by an adult.
The Hoop, Static Trapeze and Acrobatics workshop also engages soulful spirits with a series of hanging poses that fosters coordination and challenges agility. As they weave their limbs in and out of gravity-defying hoops, aerialists explore modified contortionist poses and the convoluted psyche of a soft pretzel while spinning up, down, and around the 360-degree circumference. In addition to weekend workshops, Cirque-ability also hosts summer camps. Each workshop can accommodate a maximum of 8–12 students, and participants should dress their avian instruments in athletic gear or helium-filled parachute pants.
