Under Cirque Amongus' condensed big top, a clown car's worth of awe-inspiring instructors collude to train up a new generation of confident entertainers. Come Monday evenings, Cirque throws open its doors for open-play sessions, where kids can cut loose and begin to grasp a grab bag of circus arts, such as balancing atop a ball in case of sudden Earth shrinkage or how to read a tightrope map. Kiddies hone coordination in juggling, acrobatics, and unicycling lessons and dazzle the eye with mysterious magic tricks and high-flying trapeze acts. These sessions may be redeemed all at once for four or six children or meted out over several sessions for a single performer.
Held at the Cirque Amongus activity center, the two-hour birthday parties are tailored to the interests of up-and-coming wondersmiths; children spend the first half-hour trying each act before selecting the one that best suits their ambitions and clown-wig allergies. After a break for snacks and presents, tykes transform with circus outfits and face paint and create their own three-minute routine with their skill of choice. Finally, the lights are struck and the calliope is unwound for the wee ones' big show, which is photo-captured and posted online at no additional charge. With this package, all attendees will also receive a goody bag of essential juggling equipment to help little leaguers try out for the solitaire baseball team.
A small family-run European circus, a Dutch unicycling school, various roofs—these are just a few of the places where Cirque Amongus' staff of performers has been known to hang out. Through hands-on programs, teachers enrich students' sense of teamwork, motor skills, and self-esteem by teaching them circus-arts fundamentals, which they'll use to dazzle friends and families in performances. Voted one of the top places to host a child's birthday party in Michigan by eHow, Cirque Amongus lets kids sample acrobatics at birthday parties, perfect juggling routines at afterschool sessions, and run the mile in clown shoes during school visits. Children can also practice unicycling at drop-in workshops, or test out new magic tricks at open-stage nights.
