The Issue: Food Insecurity in New York
More than 1.4 million New Yorkers experience food insecurity every year, according to data gathered from Feeding America, meaning they don’t always know where their next meal is coming from. Sometimes these people are forced to make hard choices, deciding between purchasing food or paying medical bills or housing costs. And as more people continue to be affected by unemployment and poverty, the need for emergency food grows.
The Campaign: Distributing Meals to Hungry New Yorkers
All donations to this Grassroots campaign will be used by City Harvest to provide meals for hungry New Yorkers. For every $10 raised, City Harvest can distribute meals to 40 men, women, and children. This year, City Harvest will collect 50 million pounds of produce and good food from restaurants, grocers, farms, and manufacturers, which would otherwise go to waste.
City Harvest pioneered food rescue in 1982, and this year, will collect 55 million pounds of excess food to help feed the nearly 1.4 million New Yorkers struggling to put meals on their tables. Through relationships with farms, restaurants, grocers and manufacturers, City Harvest collects nutritious food that would otherwise go to waste and deliver it free of charge to 500 soup kitchens, food pantries and other community food programs across New York City’s five boroughs. City Harvest also takes a long-term approach to hunger relief through its Healthy Neighborhoods initiative.
