What You'll Get
Wine, like a couch-crashing uncle, is generally well traveled, gives off distinct aromas, and has a tendency to stain shirt fronts. Carefully swirl, sniff, and sip a glassful of flavor with today's Groupon: for $10, you get $20 worth of wine, beer, and small meat-and-cheese plates at the wine bar or on the outdoor patio at City Vineyard.
A bounty of more than 900 select wines and 150 craft beers adorns the walls of City Vineyard's retail shop, which encompasses a charming wine bar that opens onto an airy outdoor patio. The wine-bar menu sweetly suggests that budding sommeliers pair glasses of wine with small plates of Boar's Head meats and cheeses ($11–$14). Each plate can feed two and includes fruit and cracker accompaniments. A Napa Cellars chardonnay ($8/glass) couples well with gruyere, a hard yellow cheese from Switzerland that is sweet, slightly salty, and well-versed in yodeled show tunes ($13). Gouda cheese ($12) is poised to team up with 14 Hands merlot ($7/glass) to form an unbeatable doubles ping-pong team. Guests can also peruse the shop's vast wine and beer inventory for a grape or hop-housing bottle to strike a Bacchic nerve, and City Vineyards' wine-key-carrying staff can liberate the libation for on-premises consumption ($5 corkage fee).
City Vineyard seeks to cull a community of amiable oenophiles by eschewing typical wine-store pretensions, such as tannin IQ tests, and by hosting live music and wine tastings on Friday evenings and other select dates posted on the calendar (cover charges may apply).
