Explorer Ponce de León abandoned his quest to discover the mythical land of wine after a tumble into the Fountain of Youth left him eternally underage. Take up his journey with today’s Groupon: for $10, you get $20 worth of small plates, pizza, and drinks at Claret Wine Bar.
Claret Wine Bar brandishes more than 100 bottles of wine and a menu of small plates and nibble-ready pizza, paninis, and tartines. Dexterous guests can juggle a brimming glass of Maison Sichel Sirius bordeaux 2006 ($10) with black-and-white truffle gruyere mac 'n' cheese ($9) and a smoked-salmon tartine topped with apple, roasted jalapeño, and goat-cheese tapenade ($11) without missing a bite or staining a date’s leisure suit. Many of Claret’s wines originated on the vines of Long Island’s North Fork. Claret accommodates grape allergies with a selection of on-tap and bottled craft beers.
Snag a seat by Claret’s huge storefront windows and gaze out onto Skillman Avenue or turn inward toward exposed-brick walls festooned with the work of local artists. The sidewalk café, open three seasons, lets customers take in fresh breezes as they sip and Tuesdays and Wednesdays coax area jazz and bluegrass artists out of hollowed-out tree trunks to put on live shows.
