During each six-week class series, students learn to make their own clay masterpieces using the pinch, coil, and slab methods, as well as practicing the basics of throwing pots on a wheel. They’ll also get to glaze and fire their pieces. Clay is an effective art mediums for children to discover their creative and learning skills, and new projects are introduced regularly to promote continuing skill development.
Clay for Kids
By teaching kids to shape clay, we can help shape their minds. At least, that's the belief of Clay for Kids founder Maureen Dennis. During her tenure as elementary school art teacher, Maureen observed firsthand how art projects could promote personalized learning, sensory development, fine motor skills, and even problem-solving skills.
Eventually, the arts programs at her school were cut, but she wasn't done teaching kids about clay. She began to design sculpting-based projects that supplemented other curriculum, introducing her techniques into history and literature classrooms. She began to tailor her projects from public, separate, private, and charter schools, ultimately creating over 150 unique projects as the foundations of Clay for Kids. In 2008, she decided to design her own, uniquely clay-based series of classes, and began teaching them at her newly opened studio.
