Coachella Valley History Museum

Before Coachella Valley became the incubator for modern design that it is today, it was an agricultural center, a major railroad stop, and home to the indigenous Cahuilla people. In 1965, valley residents formed The Coachella Valley Historical Society to preserve each of these eras, and opened the Coachella Valley History Museum nearly two decades later as the embodiment of that mission.

  • Size: the museum campus includes four sprawling outdoor gardens, three buildings, and all the air that surrounds them
  • Eye Catcher: the historic water tower that looms over the outdoor gallery
  • Permanent Mainstay: the 1926 adobe Smiley-Tyler House—this building, once owned by Dr. Smiley and his wife, houses the main exhibits, including a kitchen straight from the 1930s and 1940s
  • Visiting Exhibits: Footsteps in the Sand: The Cultural Heritage of Our Native Americans, which shares the culture and traditions of the five tribes indigenous to the valley through photographs and artifacts
  • Don't Miss: amid the gardens, which surround visitors in working date groves, desert flora, and roses, is Liberty Tree, Coachella Valley's oldest cork tree
