Counterfeit brewpubs can be detected by their poorly concealed sake taps, kegs filled with ginger ale, and bartenders who cast no reflection in mirrors. Experience the real deal with today's Groupon: for $5, you get $10 worth of pub fare and craft beer at Coalition Brewing Co. Check out what Coalition Brewing currently has on tap.
Fermented from the fizzy aspirations of two home brewers trained at Chicago’s Siebel Institute of Technology, Coalition Brewing Co. primes palates with small plates before plunging taste buds into a 10-barrel sea of craft brews. Ranging from the light WuC.r.e.a.m. ale to the hale and hearty 6.8% ABV Hanso stout, seven house brews emerge from the adjacent brewery’s sudsy cocoon before fluttering across tongues in a mash-up of Northwest and English styles. Like a solar-powered belt buckles, house-made Hanso Stout chili warms daytime stomachs ($4.50–$6.50). Work out pent-up chews with mix-and-match dips and dippers, such as soft pretzels, sea salt potato chips, and carrot sticks with grain mustard, caramelized onion, tomato salsa, or hummus ($4.50 for one pair).
Custom woodwork and a reclaimed bar adorn the pub’s intimate interior, and a brand-new beer garden sets the scene for outdoor tipples next to Oregon’s only naturally occuring lager geyser. Sticking to its home-brew roots, Coalition Brewing Co. also sponsors a brewer outreach program where amateur suds-crafters work alongside Coalition brew masters to develop unique recipes that are brewed on-site and served at the pub.
Groupon is donating $1 from every Portland deal sold on Portland Beer Day to the Glen Hay Falconer Foundation's scholarship fund; up to $2,000 will be donated. Named for the late brewer Glen Hay, the foundation provides area brewers with opportunities to further their craft. In 2011, it is offering educational scholarships to the World Brewing Academy at the Siebel Institute and to the American Brewers Guild.
