During his summer-camp days in Maine, a young Pablo Picasso showed an innate knack for poison-ivy treatment but scored low marks in popsicle sticks and finger paints. One-up pint-size Picasso with today's Groupon: for $10, you get $20 worth of paint-your-own ceramic pieces and studio fees at Color Me Mine, valid at the Elk Grove or Folsom locations.

At Color Me Mine, experts in clay decoration put paintbrushes and pottery in the mitts of customers old and young, guiding them through the process of creation. Budding Toyozo Arakawas follow six easy steps to craft practical, eye-pleasing ceramics, first choosing a piece from Color Me Mine's selection of hundreds of seasonally changing items, such as dishes, platters, animals, and vice-presidential candidates ($12–$45 for most). After charting out the desired design from their imagination or one of Color Me Mine's helpful technique sheets, painters select an underglaze from an underpalette of more than 70 colors, then gently beautify their objets d'art with the focus and ingenuity of a peregrine falcon possessed by Norman Rockwell's benevolent ghost.

Color Me Mine handles all kiln-firing work, allowing clients to pick up their final products four to seven days after painting. Both locations' studio fee––$8 for children ages 12 and younger, and $10 for everyone else––covers all paints, the use of supplies, and rights to imitate scenes from Ghost. While the Elk Grove location's studio fee also covers firing, the Folsom location charges a $1 firing fee.

About Color Me Mine

Color Me Mine's international franchise of DIY ceramics studios caters to both a younger and older crowd. Hundreds of unadorned ceramic pieces—including vases and dinnerware—await the attentions of muses of kids and their keepers alike, as do glazes in earthy tones and bright crimsons to frighten bulls away from china cabinets. Guests follow simple step-by-step instructions that leave plenty of room for creative expression. When painters are satisfied with their work, the professional kiln-workers help glaze and fire it for them before customers retrieve the finished piece a few days later.
