Washington Post columnist E.J. Dionne Jr. comes to the Cubberley Community Center in Palo Alto to discuss key points from his book Why the Right Went Wrong: Conservatism from Goldwater to the Tea Party and Beyond. He'll pitch his argument for the ways in which American conservatism and the Republican Party took a wrong turn after they adopted Barry Goldwater's world view in 1964. According to Dionne -- the author of Why Americans Hate Politics -- the radicalism of today's conservatism is not the product of the Tea Party. He posits the tea partiers are the true heirs to Goldwater ideology, and their ideological purity movement did more than just drive moderates out of the Republican Party, it also beat back alternative definitions of conservatism.
The discussion will be followed by a book-signing session.
