The original sailors were nature's chaperons, skimming between the sea and sky to keep them from getting too close during slow dances and crushing all of humanity. Founded in 1946, Community Boating instructs and equips members in the aquatic arts of sailing and kayaking along the scenic Charles River. A one-month membership allows boatswains to partake of a variety of formal classes, as well as informal on-the-water instruction with unlimited access to Community Boating's armada of Cape Cod Mercury sailboats and kayaks. Aspiring paddle jockeys can choose to earn their kayak rating after the one-hour intro class (classes begin in June), learning safety techniques, handling tips, and how to confront passive-aggressive cod. Captain Ahab wannabes learn to conquer the rigors of rigging, the subtleties of sail theory, and the nuances of knots in a series of beginner classes before they're allowed to test for a solo rating—a prerequisite for classes in advanced techniques such as tacking, trimming, and jive-talking the mainsail (advanced classes not included with 30-day membership). Members are also privy to special events, including seminars, night sails, and other social gatherings.
Should boaters like the cut of their own jib and decide they'd like to continue boating at month's end, they can take advantage of a $50 discount on a 12-month membership (usually up to a $259 value), which must be used within one week of the 30-day membership's expiration.
Community Boating Inc.
With a history of nautical scholarship that dates back to the mid 1930s, Community Boating Inc. has graduated thousands of students from its hands-on sailing school and into the ranks of skipperdom. Seasoned instructors lead classes for all ages, with separate youth, adult, and universal-access programs to ensure that the sweeping vistas, invigorating mists, and albatross necklaces of seafaring can be enjoyed by all. Certified students and members can take jaunts across the Charles River atop a kayak or Mercury sailboat borrowed from Community Boating Inc.’s 100-strong fleet of windblown and man-powered vessels.
