Marathons are an excellent opportunity to get back in shape, give back to the community, and offer retired sneakers one more brush with glory. Rediscover podiatric passion with today’s Groupon to Compete Green. Choose between the following options:
- For $57, you get one registration for the Ojai 2 Ocean Marathon on Sunday, June 5, at 6 a.m. (a $115 value). Runners start off from Nordhoff High School in Ojai and finish at the Ventura Pier.
- For $32, you get one registration for the Ojai 2 Ocean Half Marathon on Sunday, June 5, at 6 a.m. (a $65 value). Runners begin and end at the Ventura Pier.
The Ojai 2 Ocean marathons lay the groundwork for sprinters to traverse miles of stunning oceanfront vistas in a race hosted by Compete Green, an organization dedicated to eco-friendly initiatives. Ojai 2 Ocean’s half marathon begins at the scenic Ventura Pier and continues along a two-loop course across the oceanfront and the Pierpont neighborhood, where runners must dodge rolling kegs of congratulatory Gatorade tossed into the road by adoring locals.
Alternatively, the full marathon—which launches near the gorgeous mountains around Ojai—lets contestants foot scale their way seaside down 26.2 miles of open roadways, rife with views of scenic beaches and mountain peaks. The course ends at the Ventura pier, where racers will converge with the half-marathon participants for sweaty-palmed high-fives and celebratory games of sneaker shot put. All finishers receive a T-shirt and medal made of recycled materials, and winners receive special eco-friendly awards and consensual hugs from trees.
The two challenging courses are considered some of the fastest in the country, and the full marathon is a USATF-certified qualifier for the Boston Marathon. Both marathons take place on Sunday, June 5, at 6 a.m., and shuttles at the Ventura County Fairgrounds cart runners to Nordhoff High School in Ojai starting at 4 a.m.
Compete Green's endurance events, from 5Ks to marathons, revolve around sustainable practices and an engagement with the outdoors. Cofounders Tom Taylor and Ben DeWitt honed their hamstrings and toughened their hooves while churning up trails from the South Shores of Lake Michigan to Xterra's off-road triathlons in Maui. Tom and Ben found more common ground in their interest in environmentally conscious event management. Compete Green initiatives furnish their 100% free-range participants with sustainable awards such as tree seedlings and organic and recycled apparel. Race-day amenities include prevalent recycling bins, recyclable race numbers, and an athletic-shoe-recycling program.
