Computer History Museum

Silicon Valley. Analog computers. Artificial intelligence. The Computer History Museum chronicles the 2,000-plus year history of computing. The exhibits include a range of displays that introduce guests to ancient devices, the first computers from the 1940s and 50s, and examples of contemporary mobile computing.

During visits, interactive exhibits invite players to compete in a game of pong or relay the stories of the first computer pioneers. The online exhibits detail the history of computer chess, marketing the computer revolution, and reflect back on this day in computer history. The museum also displays a fully-functioning Charles Babbage’s first automatic computing machine—the Babbage Engine, which he designed in 1834, though it wasn’t built until more than a century later—giving visitors a rare glimpse into the evolution computing.

“First of all, this is not a place for small children or anyone that can not read easily But it is a Great place to see the timeline of computing technology There are no interactive displays like at the Tech Museum but this is not a negative but a positive The exhibits are exceptionally detailed and between the videos on many displays and the display documentation, you get a complete and eye-opening understanding of each topic I recommend the free guided preview tour but it is only OK because our docent skimmed through the presentation and was too young to fully understand a lot of the exhibits The Babbage Engine is amazing to see and they actually operate it once a day Check with them before you go, for the time it is shown working There is also a display on the Google Self Driving Car that is a real treat But this is a BIG museum and even if you are not very computer literate, you will want to Go early and give yourself time to see what you want without feeling rushed or that you are missing something You probably will anyway!”

  • “Get the tour for interesting stories.”

  • “Try to make it in time for the demonstrations!”
