Conch Republic Rocketts blends the laid-back, parrot-head feel of Key West with the charm of Rocketts Landing. Poised at a bend in the James River, the restaurant looks out onto the marina with unobstructed views of bald eagles and sunsets, all against the backdrop of the Richmond skyline. Inside, an open-air tiki bar and an expansive patio make the 6,000-square-foot restaurant feel more like a party than a dining destination.

But the menu proves itself worthy upon first bite. Homemade key lime pie and an extensive island drink menu conjures the bright flavors of the Southernmost City. Its entrees cast a wider cultural net, however. Cajun specialties such as peel-and-eat shrimp, red beans and rice, and gator chili filled with red beans and tender alligator tail meat transport palates to the bayou. That said, the smoked baby-back ribs smothered in guava barbecue and the mac 'n' cheese baked with cold-water lobster and gruyere puts folks in mind of good ol' Anywhere, USA.
