Before we boarded magic carpets and explored a whole new world with Walt Disney’s Aladdin, there was Lotte Reiniger’s The Adventures of Prince Achmed. Now Constellation Theatre Company brings this beloved animated adaptation of The Arabian Nights to DC’s The Source for a big-screen showing featuring a live, original score by world-music percussionist Tom Teasley. Known as the oldest surviving animated feature, this 1926 film features striking hand-cut silhouettes and takes its handsome hero on a flying horse ride to win the heart of a princess, while battling demons, befriending a witch and meeting Aladdin. Teasley, who’s collaborated with the National Symphony and served as an artist-in-residence at The Kennedy Center, is famed for his innovative percussion work, combining instruments and playing styles from Africa, India and the Middle East to create a unique tapestry of rhythm.
