Even with their sights set on eternal glory, the well-greaved Achaeans besieging Troy had to break for dinner. Today's Groupon brings bounteous Hellenic fare across the wine-dark sea and straight into your mouth, the skilled breaker of horses: for $12, you get $25 worth of authentic Greek fare at Costas Restaurant in the heart of Tarpon Springs Sponge Docks.
Costas' seasoned chefs combine olive oil, fresh vegetables, herbs, wine, fish, and yogurt to make classic Greek cookery that will leave you longing for the islands of the Aegean, or an island on top of another, better island. Curious and/or indecisive hunger-havers might try Costas' Greek platter, which contains an array of moussaka, pastitsio, stuffed grape leaves, gyro meat, and tzatziki sauce ($14.95). Costas also offers vegetarian options, such as hummus ($4.95) and spanakopita ($11.95). If you're craving the toothsome beasts of the brine, try charbroiled snapper ($19.95), Grecian octopus ($12.95), calamari ($11.95), or three styles of shrimp ($10.95 to $15.95). Other perks include lunch specials, a children's menu, a recently upgraded bar, and breakfast on Saturdays and Sundays.
Costas is a clean, comfortable restaurant stocked to the rafters with a friendly, experienced staff, who wait patiently to greet you with freshly baked bread. Ask about a dish and they'll be glad to tell you its ingredients, how it's prepared, and what kinds of dreams its ingestion will induce. If your New Year's resolution was to try something new and you've already learned how to tie knots with your feet, completed a Sudoku puzzle, and sold something that wasn't yours on eBay, this is the perfect chance to treat your taste buds to Greek food. Stick to your resolution, for as Homer put it most succinctly in Book 19 of the Iliad:
οὐ γὰρ ἀνὴρ πρόπαν ἦμαρ ἐς ἠέλιον καταδύντα
ἄκμηνος σίτοιο δυνήσεται ἄντα μάχεσθαι.

About Costas Restaurant
Stelios Migadakis had long dreamt of moving his family from New York to Florida’s sun-drenched shores, jumping at the chance to open an eatery in Tarpon Springs’ Greek Town. He draws from the Old World recipes of his kin in Crete and his wife's relatives in Lesvos to compose a menu consisting of delicately battered seafood and slow-roasted lamb and beef. Within the elegant eatery, murals of serene Greek isles and grazing herds of Trojan horses punctuate the pale-marble walls as Greek music spills out onto the adjoining patio.
